In terms of salary, he is not the poorest but by virtue of his lifestyle of simplicity, he is the poorest president in the world, especially in this jet age. The man in focus is the 77 year-old president of Uruguay called José Alberto “Pepe” Mujica Cordano.
He earns a monthly salary of $12,500 but he spends just $1,250 (10%) of it on himself and his family while he donates the balance of 90% to charity. According to him, “I do fine with that amount; I have to do fine because there are many Uruguayans who live with much less.”
He has no bank account, no debt and no other asset apart from his aging Volkswagen Beetle car (see above) that he drives as his official and personal car. His wife, a senator, owns the farmhouse that they live in and he also has a dog, Manuela, as a companion.
Jose Mujica, a former senator, came into office as the president of Uruguay on the 1st of March, 2010 and since then he has been living by example as the corruption rate in his country has drastically reduce.
